Bionik-Seminar
Physical factors play a fundamental role in the interactions of organisms with each other and with their environment. For insects, the ability to attach to and move on different substrates is essential for survival and has led to fascinating adaptations. Animal adhesive organs are substrate-tolerant, wear-resistant, self-cleaning and rapidly controllable, making them promising models for biomimetics. I will show how insects control adhesion when jumping from smooth plant surfaces or clinging to rocks underwater with suction organs, and how some insects have evolved counter-adaptations to safely climb on extremely slippery plant surfaces.
