Catalytic reactors are an excellent example of a system that remains largely unknown to the public despite its critical role in industry and society. Almost all the fuels we use for transportation, the food we eat, the medicine we take, and the building materials that keep us warm make use of heterogeneous catalysis. The potential for the optimization of catalytic reactors is significant, since the energy consumption of the overall processes is enormous. Like most technical systems, these reactors are opaque, making it difficult to observe what is happening inside them. This is why our understanding of the local conditions within these reactors remains scarce, despite their usage for far more the 100 years. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can shed a new light on local phenomena and draw a three-dimensional picture of the conditions within such reactors. In this presentation it will be shown how powerful the combination of reactive CFD and MRI is to gain detailed knowledge and how bioinspiration can also contribute to better reaction conditions in reactors.
