The neck of the birds - a model for arms of robots

The mechanical properties of natural systems can inspire innovative technological solutions, particularly for robotic applications. Birds are best known for their ability to fly. But they have many other amazing properties. This is the case of their necks. The AVINECK project aims to quantify and interpret the relationships between bird neck anatomy, mechanical properties and function, and to model them using robotics tools, both for the design of robotic arms and for understanding evolutionary mechanisms.
