Student Health Management

Healthy through your studies!

We want you to feel as good as possible at our university and to make it through your studies in a healthy way, which is why we're starting up a Student Health Management service (SGM) for you in 2023. We want to provide you with support for your health and, together with you, make Hochschule Bremen a healthier place for all of us.

Join in!

We kicked things off with our survey of students at the beginning of the year. The results were clear: Overall, you are doing well at HSB, but there is still room for improvement. In May, we want to evaluate the survey results together with you in a workshop, develop further ideas and look for ways to implement them. We look forward to seeing you there!

  • In January, we asked you: How are things going for you and your health during in your studies at Hochschule Bremen? Almost 600 students answered us, gave us insights and made suggestions - for which we are very grateful!

Now we want to move forward so that Student Health Management at HSB can take shape. Together we want to evaluate the results of the survey, develop further ideas and look for ways to implement them.

Above all, we need YOU to make this happen!

We're therefore happy to invite you to a workshop on May 3, 2023 (in German).

From 3-6 p.m., we will find out what health issues are most important to you at HSB and how we can make HSB a nicer and healthier place. There will be food provided during the workshop.

Want to participate? If so, we welcome your registration (name, degree program, semester) by April 17, 2023 to: studienberatung@hs-bremen.de. We will inform you about the exact location of the event after your registration.

Previous programs in SGM

Here you can find an overview of the programs that HSB has organized in the area of Student Health Management so far:

  • All those who actively participated in StudienINFOtag 2023 were invited to refuel together afterwards.

    There were

    •     guided cool-downs and relaxation exercises,
    •     short impulses on stress & mental strategies,
    •     as well as a wrap station where students learned about Meal-Prep and tried it out

This enabled our 80 student scouts, many faculty members and other participants to recharge after the full day of events.

  • At the beginning of January, around 600 students answered questions about their health and their desires the SGM for HSB. Thank you very much! Here's a quick preview of the results:

The students of HSB are mostly doing well and like their studies:

    •     60% of the students are mostly doing well.
    •     64% of the students say: My studies help me personally.
    •     87% of the students say that there is positive interaction with each other among students in their study program.

Many HSB students have other obligations and feel stress:

    •     60% of students have to take care of other things besides their studies (family, jobs, etc.).
    •     85% of students experience stress in their studies.

Learning and exams are triggers for stress in studies:

    •     41% of students find learning by themselves rather difficult.
    •     53% of students find exams rather difficult.
    •     85% of students have exams that happen very close to one another.

This is what students want for more relaxed and healthy studying:

    •     Easing the burden of exams
    •     Compatibility with family
    •     Quiet rooms for self-study
    •     Group rooms for meeting and working
    •     Break rooms
    •     Counseling center for health issues
    •     Water dispenser

Students would like to see support programs for these topics:

    •     Dealing with stress
    •     Time and self-management
    •     Dealing with learning difficulties
    •     Physical activities
    •     Relaxation exercises
  • In December 2022, students at all HSB locations were able to mix up delicious smoothies. To mix them, however, they had to pedal hard 😄 ...

Student Health Management - what actually is that?

Student Health Management (SGM) is a program at universities that looks after the health of students. On the one hand, it aims to promote and maintain the health of students. On the other hand, it develops health-promoting structures at universities that are intended to make a lasting contribution to good study conditions.

The term "Corporate Health Management" (WHM) is perhaps more familiar. WHM develops and offers health-promoting measures and structures for employees in companies and organizations, with the aim of maintaining the employees' working capacity.

SGM is based on this concept. In addition to individual health and the development of beneficial structures, we at HSB are also concerned with another aspect: you should also be able to experience the importance of health and its promotion for your later professional life as a member of the workforce and acquire competencies in this area.

Who is involved in SGM?

At Hochschule Bremen, the Zentrale Studienberatung (Central Student Advisory Service (ZSB) ) coordinates the area of Student Health Management. In addition, the AStA, the Psychologische Beratungsstelle (Psychological Counseling Center), the Zentrum für Lehren und Lernen (Center for Teaching and Learning) and HSB's Corporate Health Management (Betriebliches Gesundheitsmanagement) are involved in setting up the Student Health Management.

The Techniker Krankenkasse and the hkk are also involved as cooperation partners.
