Student life

Sports and activities

Preparing presentations, writing assignments, planning projects – everyday university life can sometimes be quite a challenge. Sporting activities are a valuable addition and a healthy change for body and soul. The offers at HSB range from low-threshold opportunities to promote health and reduce stress to sport groups. In addition to the positive physical effects, sporting activities also provide an opportunity to make new contacts and to spend time together with others.

University Sports

HSB takes part in the University Sports at the University of Bremen. Its programme ranges from A for aerobics to Z for Zumba. Here you can try out new sports or compete in competitions. In addition to well-known individual and team sports, there are a variety of unconventional offers that are always fun, keep you fit and also promote communicative and social skills. Strength training, yoga and numerous water sports are also part of the range of university sports.

HSB is a member of the General German University Sports Association (ADH). HSB students can participate in top-level national and international university sports events.

Sign up, try it out, work out!

The offers of the “Hochschulsport” at the University of Bremen are open to all students and employees of the universities in Bremen. The courses are offered semester by semester during the lecture period. Registration for the winter semester is possible from the beginning of October, for the summer semester from mid-March. During the lecture-free period there is also a holiday programme.

Runners wanted! Since the winter semester 2017/18, the HSB Tri-Runners have been training technique, strength, endurance and speed every week for a competition-oriented run, often covering 5 to 8 kilometers. In addition to running, the athletic side focuses on the endurance sport of triathlon. The team consists of students, lecturers and employees from the administration.

If you're aiming for a half marathon or a five-kilometre ‘fun run’, the Tri-Runners are the right people for you. Because a joint participation in running or triathlon events is also part of the offer, depending on the level of performance and motivation. However, students who simply want to go for a brisk run in a group are also welcome to join the HSB Tri-Runners.

Ready to go?

Summer semester 2026:

Training takes place on Wednesdays from 6:15 - 7:45 pm on the running track at ATS Buntentor (behind the Lidice Haus next to the Werdersee)

Fancy a sporting challenge? Join the rowing team!

The University Sports rowing team consists of round about 45 students of the Hochschule Bremen - City University of Applied Sciences (HSB), the University of Bremen and other universities located in Bremen. It is part of the rowing club “Bremer Ruderverein von 1882 e.V. – Rudern in Bremen”.

The competitive team trains together several times a week in various boat classes – from singles to eights. The main goal each year is the German University Rowing Championships (DHM Rudern). However, the rowing teams and individual competitors also take part in other sporting events, both on the water and on land, throughout the year.

We have members at all levels of ability. Whether you’re already experienced in rowing or want to learn from scratch – we welcome anyone who’s keen on regular training, has a competitive spirit and wants to be part of a genuine team.

Are you already a rower looking for a motivated team? Or would you like to learn to row and train regularly? Then get in touch at studis@bremer-ruderverein.de

Pedal boats are boring? Not when shipbuilding students build them. The HSB's ‘Straak zu Bremen’ waterbike team develops high-tech pedal boats from high-quality materials and components. The boats are designed for best performance – after all, the team competes in international competitions.

To be competitive, the shipbuilders have to work at the highest technical level and always be up to date. The boats, designed and manufactured in-house, plough through the water at up to 11 knots (around 20 kilometres per hour).

Ready to weigh anchor?

Training usually takes place in spring according to weather conditions; construction takes place all year round.

You don't have to study shipbuilding to take part. Students from other subjects who are technically interested and talented are also welcome. The Waterbike team is also happy to receive support in the areas of social media and marketing.
