Working and career at HSB

Practice-oriented, international and full of opportunities

The Hochschule Bremen (HSB) is the second largest higher education institution in the state of Bremen and a leading address for applied sciences in the northwest of Germany. In the heart of Bremen's Neustadt district, around 9.000 students study and research in more than 60 Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, encompassing engineering, the natural sciences, economics as well as social and engineering sciences. Our degree programmes are characterised by orientation to practice, tuition in small groups, and a strong international orientation.

In teaching and research, we address the pressing topics of our time – from sustainable energy systems to issues surrounding the quality of life. We adopt an application-oriented and interdisciplinary approach in everything we do. In close cooperation with private enterprises, scientific institutions and socially relevant organisations in the region and around the world, we develop solutions for virtually all areas of practice.

Around 360 partnerships worldwide and a high proportion of international students underscore our cosmopolitan profile. This puts us in a top position among German universities of applied sciences.

We are always on the lookout for qualified reinforcement – why not come and join the team!

Excellent career prospects

In application-oriented education and research, we see ourselves as a driving force for both regional and personal development. Committed and motivated employees are the indispensible factor for our success and contribute to the further development of the university. Along with our deep commitment to providing our students with the best possible preparation for their future professional activities, our focus therefore also lies on the well-being of our employees. We offer a variety of counselling and continuing education opportunities to provide them with ongoing support. In addition to further training, this also includes the promotion of stays abroad as well as cultural and sports activities.

We see the diversity of our university members as a strength. That is why we are committed to diversity and equal opportunities and in this context design targeted measures to promote women and people with disabilities. The compatibility of career and family are another high priority at HSB and form the cornerstones of our staff policy. Flexible working hours, in-house childcare and internal service points are central elements contributing to the good work-life balance and relaxed working atmosphere at HSB. Independent audits regularly check for the effectiveness of the measures we implement in this direction.

Bremen, captivating Hanseatic city on the Weser

Bremen knows how to excel – not only in top-level research, but also with the quality of life here. In the Hanseatic city, metropolitan flair meets northern German gemütlichkeit, top-class sport meets a wide range of cultural activities, a sense of tradition meets cosmopolitanism. HSB is right in the middle of all this, spread over three campuses in the centrally located Neustadt district of Bremen. This lively and diverse part of town is extremely popular with HSB students and employees alike. At the same time, Bremen's impressive city centre with the Town Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the neighbouring historical quarter, the Altstadt, as well as the river embankment with it’s typical German Biergarten are only a few minutes' walk away. Thanks to excellent transport connections, HSB is easy to reach from within Bremen and from the surrounding area.

10 good reasons to choose HSB

  • The Bremen public service offers secure and versatile jobs for all its employees.

Moreover, we support you in providing for a supplementary pension. You can find out about this attractive proposition under VBL.

  • We offer highly flexible working-time models, which also include home office. This gives you every opportunity to establish a satisfactory work-life balance.

Almost all positions are designed in such a way that part-time work is also possible. If you are interested in a particular vacancy, you can contact the person named in the job advertisement with any questions you may have about working hours.

  • The Hochschule Bremen is located in the Neustadt district near the city centre and is easily accessible by public transport. You can take advantage of discounts on buses, trams, and trains with the so-called Jobticket offered by a consortium of public transport providers. And if you sign up for a ‘WK-Bike’ there are bicycles you can even use free of charge.

And if you prefer to use your own bike, we offer protected bicycle parking – at some locations even with a charging station for your e-bike. Speaking of bicycles: Did you know that the university is located in the middle of a particularly bicycle-friendly part of town known as the ‘bicycle district’? The surrounding streets and traffic flows are designed specifically with the needs of cyclists in mind. And if your bicycle needs a repair, the Repair Café will fix it for you.

  • We have been conducting the ‘Family-friendly university’ audit regularly since 2005 – and we really practice what we preach by promoting the compatibility of family and career in every way we possibly can. Feel free to talk to us about working-time models, dual-career options, childcare and other topics that are important to you.

The Hochschule Bremen supports the toddler care association Flummi e. V. - Eltern-Kind-Initiative an der Hochschule Bremen and Socke e. V.

  • The Studierendenwerk Bremen (Student Services Office) provides a range of services for the well-being of HSB members, especially in the area of food and refreshments.

  • We would be very happy to have you join us! If you do, to make your start easier we have developed an introductory programme for all new employees. You will receive all the important information right at the beginning, and colleagues will be at hand to answer any questions you may have in your area of work.

  • The Hochschule Bremen has its own personnel development department, which offers a wide spectrum of customised training measures. You can also take advantage of the central further education programme offered by the Training and Further Education Centre of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

And if you have additional training needs, you can take advantage of Bildungszeit (training time) under the Bremen Bildungszeitgesetz (Training Time Act): Every year, you can take a total of five days educational leave to attend training measures of your choice. Questions in this context should be addressed to the Human Resources Department.

  • We place great emphasis on the needs and priorities of our female employees. The Equal Opportunities Office and the Women's Office support women in their very special concerns. And we pay special attention to female pupils and students who are interested in the field of mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and technology (the MINT subjects).

Diversity is perceived as an opportunity. The Hochschule Bremen is among the first universities to have already implemented the second action plan in the framework of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Take a look at our action plan for more information on this. You will see that we have spread our measures very widely: The whole theme of accessibility is top priority in the design and construction of HSB buildings. Moreover, we take barrier-free communication very seriously, and we take care to ensure that everything surrounding student studies and employees’ workplaces is adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.

  • No shortage of offers here, either.

Sports enthusiasts can participate in activities and courses organised by the university sports association. Moreover, the Hochschule Bremen itself also supports some very special sports events.

In addition, you also have the opportunity to benefit from discounts via the Qualitrain offer of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

Culture is important to us. We engage in literature via poetryontheroad, try our hand at theatre and make music. We cordially invite you to participate as much as you want!

  • If you still have any questions, let us know and we will be happy to help you!
