Biology is involved in solving many problems of the present and future. Biologists are much in demand. In many areas, their scientific expertise is indispensable when it comes to finding cutting-edge solutions, e.g. for the conservation of our natural environment and biodiversity, sustainable use of all terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, development of new materials, biomedicine and biotechnology, national and international nature conservation and blue sciences. As a graduate of the Master's programme, you will have the prerequisites to take on specialist and management tasks in many of these fields – a profession with a future!

The International Master's programme in Industrial and Environmental Biology deepens the technical and methodological competences acquired through a Bachelor's degree in biology. A main feature of the programme is project and research-oriented teaching in close cooperation with partners in the region.

In the focal areas of industrial biology and environmental biology, you will acquire specialist knowledge and methodological skills relating to specific issues and problem areas, project management, (intercultural) communication, presentations, team leadership, self-reflection and critical faculties.

We expressly encourage and support our students to assume social responsibility through active participation in projects and events on sustainable future-oriented developments.

Programme structure

The first semester begins in the summer semester with five theory modules. The module Mathematics and Statistics for Biologists is compulsory for all students. The remaining four modules are taught in consecutive blocks (4 weeks each). In addition to the two compulsory modules of the respective specialisation, you can choose the two compulsory elective modules of this semester from the compulsory modules of the respective other specialisation or from a supplementary compulsory elective area.

The compulsory elective area enables students to supplement the range of subjects to suit their chosen specialisation. The courses available come either from other degree programmes at the Hochschule Bremen or from other universities in the Bremen region. The range of compulsory elective subjects can vary from year to year.

The second semester focuses on project studies. Here you will develop an interdisciplinary spectrum of methods. The framework for the project studies is provided by a ‘call for proposals’ for research topics from the current fields of work of the participating lecturers, which takes place at the latest towards the end of the summer semester. Depending on the topic, you research the state of research, define working hypotheses and goals and draw up a work, cost and time schedule. Throughout this task, you receive on-going support from the supervising lecturer who specifies the topic for the project. The project work of the second semester is formally structured into five modules.

The projects can also be carried out with (and at) partners in the area of research or business – in Germany or abroad. In this programme, students are required to show initiative in terms of information procurement, literature research and self-organisation, which will benefit them in later professional practice.

The programme concludes in the third semester with the Master's thesis (duration 22 weeks) and the associated Master's colloquium. The Master's thesis can also be written in cooperation with (and at) partners in the area of research or business in Germany or abroad.
