Interdisciplinary Sustainability Management M.Sc.

The consumption of natural resources, climate change and global economic and social developments are the central challenges society must deal with if we are to have a sustainable future. The associated socio-ecological transformation process needs people who can think and act in an interdisciplinary way and are able to develop solutions to complex problems.

The Master's programme Interdisciplinary Sustainability Management (INA M.Sc.) is aimed at Bachelor's graduates in economics, engineering, environmental sciences, political and social sciences, spatial and urban planning, etc. who are interested in ecological and social issues and see change as an opportunity.

Students of the degree programme acquire knowledge about the structure and dynamics of social-ecological systems (system knowledge), knowledge about methods and concepts for goal-oriented change (transformation knowledge) as well as knowledge about desired social conditions in the future (orientation knowledge). Using practice-related examples, students learn how to manage social-ecological transformation processes across sectors and professional fields.

Career prospects

Companies, public administration, and NGOs have a growing need for people who are able to anticipate the interactions between the environment, economy and society and are capable of implementing and advancing sustainable innovation processes. Possible fields of work include environmental protection, energy management, urban and regional planning, public relations, and education.

Due to the practice-oriented and interdisciplinary nature of the degree programme, graduates are quickly able to engage as ‘problem solvers’ in their future field of work.

Practical application

The Interdisciplinary Sustainability Management degree programme has a focus on practical application from the very beginning. Students already learn during their studies how they can contribute their knowledge to transformation processes. They work in interdisciplinary teams, deal with different perspectives and interpretations and jointly develop solutions for social problems.

In this context, they are accompanied by lecturers from different faculties of Hochschule Bremen, who jointly address a scientific question from their respective disciplinary perspective. A central element of the programme is the inter-semester project, in which interdisciplinary student teams adopt a practice- and solution-oriented approach to issues related to their future career fields. The project studies are also supervised by teachers from different disciplines and implemented with the involvement of practice partners.
