Beim Tragen von persönlicher Schutzausrüstung wie Protektoren, Orthesen und Prothesen führen Körperbewegungen bislang unweigerlich zur Bildung von unerwünschten Falten im Material. Diese Falten können die Bewegungsfreiheit einschränken und den Tragekomfort reduzieren. Bislang setzen Hersteller zur Lösung dieses Problems auf dünnes, flexibles, mattenartiges Protektorenmaterial, mit unterschiedlichen Elementformen. Diese Ansätze haben bisher das Problem der unkontrollierten Faltenbildung nicht gelöst. Die Strukturen und Prinzipien der Exoskelette von Arthropoden liefern jedoch neue, vielversprechende biologisch inspirierte Ansätze für die Entwicklung „faltenfreier“ Protektorentypen. Ziel des SUVA-Projekts ist unter Verwendung verschiedener Herstellungsverfahren (3-Druck, Tiefziehen, Laminierungstechniken) die Entwicklung eines neuen Materials zur Minimierung und Kontrolle von Falten in Schutzausrüstung. Dieses neue Material soll durch sein Verhalten bei Körperbewegungen im Vergleich zu momentan erhältlichen Konkurrenzprodukten deutliche Vorteile in Bezug auf Gewicht, Tragekomfort und damit verbundene Akzeptanz des Anwenders bieten.
