Public spaces frame everyday life and passing moments; they allow for both proximity and distance. Within the urban fabric, they help us to orient ourselves and identify places. And sometimes they also offer a glimpse into the past.
Accordingly, public spaces are always related to urban design and architecture. Spatially, they function as islands, oases, stages, salons, windows…; socially, as meeting places, markets, counterspaces, venues for public gatherings and negotiation…; and ecologically, as wild meadows, groves, bodies of water…
Spatial, social and environmental aspects of the urban spaces each require their own specific approaches and appropriate formats. These include design projects and studies, the analysis and evaluation of case studies, field trips, exhibitions, …
