FM system available for borrowing

Starting in the summer semester of 2025, students and employees of HSB will be able to borrow a mobile FM system for their own use or for events. The devices can be borrowed for a single event or for up to three months.

An FM (frequency modulation) system is a wireless transmission system that helps people with hearing aids or cochlear implants to better understand speech in noisy environments or over long distances.

  • The Roger On microphone picks up the speaker's voice and transmits it either directly to a compatible hearing aid or to the Roger NeckLoop, which relays the signal to the hearing aid via an induction loop.

    When is which device needed?

    ? In short:

    • Direct Roger use possible? → Roger On only

    • Hearing aid not directly compatible? → Roger NeckLoop required as receiver

    ✅ Roger On only

    • If the hearing aid or cochlear implant is directly Roger-compatible

✅ Roger On + Roger NeckLoop

    • If the hearing aid is not directly Roger-compatible but has a telecoil (T-coil)

    • If no Roger receiver is integrated into the hearing aid

    • If headphones are to be used instead of a hearing aid

  • HSB students and staff can borrow “Roger On” and “Roger NeckLoop” from Phonak, for up to three months. To do so, please contact Laurens Monka orJan Rönnau from the Center for Teaching and Learning / MMCC Technical Support & Development.

  • Who can borrow the FM system?

Students and employees of Bremen University of Applied Sciences.

How long can I borrow the FM system?

Up to three months, with the option to extend.

How can I borrow the FM system?

Please contactLaurens Monka orJan Rönnau at the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Does the FM system work with all hearing aid models?

If the hearing aid is not directly compatible with Roger/does not have a built-in Roger receiver, the Roger NeckLoop (receiver) must be used in addition to Roger On (microphone/transmitter) and the induction coil/telephone coil/T-coil on the hearing aid must be activated. The Roger NeckLoop acts as an intermediary – it receives the signal from the Roger On and transmits it via induction to the T-coil of the hearing aid. If you have any questions about your specific model, it is best to contact your hearing care professional.

Do I have to pay for the damage if the device is damaged?

When you borrow the device, you sign a loan agreement that also covers damage. In the event of damage or loss, the borrower is responsible for the cost. It is therefore strongly recommended that you take out liability insurance if you do not already have it.

Do I need proof to demonstrate my need?

    No.

A lecturer does not want me to use the system. What can I do/who can I contact?

You can contact the Inclusive Studying Advisory Service at the Central Student Advisory Service for advice and further information.

Does the FM system record sound? Can it be accessed later?

No, the FM system does not record audio.

Roger On transmits sound in real time to the hearing aid or Roger NeckLoop, but does not store any data. There is no way to access it later or retrieve recordings directly from the device.

Instructions

  • Anleitungsvideo - Verwendung Roger On™ (German)

  • Use in group conversations or noisy environments

Roger On can be used in various situations to make speech clearer:

    On the table (table mode)

    • Ideal for meetings, seminars, or group conversations
