Support in everyday student life

Support in everyday student life

Studying presents many challenges, which makes it even more important that all students receive the support they need. On this page, you will find information on technical aids, digital accessibility, and barrier-less living, among other topics. You will also find an overview of the facilities at HSB and opportunities for social networking.

Organisation of the daily study routine

  • In the room finder (Raumfinder) you will find information on barrier-free access to the HSB buildings.

Information on accessibility in the Bremen/Lower Saxony Transport Network (VBN)

Wheelmap provides an overview of wheelchair-accessible locations (worldwide).

  • Instructors can support students with disabilities or chronic illnesses if they are informed of the students' particular limitations at an early stage. In a discussion, you can agree together on what support might look like in each individual case. If necessary, instructors are also the first point of contact when it comes to agreeing on compensation for disadvantages in exams and coursework.

Instructors can themselves obtain support and tips, which are summarized on the information page for instructors and staff.

  • Accommodation

The Studentenwerk operates a total of 13 student residences in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Monthly rent varies between €250 and €300 depending on room size and type, and includes all utilities. Internet access and satellite TV are also included in the rent.

In Bremen, the “Luisental,” “Am Fleet,” “Geschworenenweg,” and “Emmy” residential complexes offer special accommodation for students with disabilities. Some of these rooms are significantly larger than the standard rooms, which can result in a higher flat-rate rent of up to €350.

Students who are interested in such barrier-free apartments should contact the Bremen Student Services Association at an early stage. Students with disabilities or chronic illnesses have priority when it comes to allocating such places. It is recommended that you enclose a hardship application and a medical certificate with your housing application.

    Information on housing allowance

In principle, students are excluded from receiving housing allowance, as they are theoretically entitled to BAföG. Nevertheless, financial assistance is possible under certain circumstances.

In order to receive housing allowance, you must not be entitled to BAföG “on the merits.”

This is the case, among other things, if you:

    • have exceeded the maximum funding period for BAföG,

    • are over 30 years old,

    • change your field of study without good reason,

    • are unable to provide proof of academic achievement.

This does not apply if your parents' income is too high and you are therefore not entitled to state funding.

Information from the Studentenwerk on housing allowance

  • Some accessible toilet facilities at HSB are only accessible with a Euro key.

For short-term use, you can borrow a Euro key from the Info Point (located at Neustadtswall 30, main entrance of building AB).

You can obtain your own Euro key from the State Disability Commissioner (LBB), Marktstraße 3 / Börsenhof C, or from the State Working Group for Self-Help (LAGS) at Waller Heerstraße 55.

Further information can be found on the relevant information pages:?LBB Euro key information page ?LAGS Euro key information page

  • Bremen University of Applied Sciences is committed to identifying and gradually removing digital barriers.

Do you have questions about digital accessibility within your studies, or are you perhaps confronted with barriers and need support in this regard? Anna Peschke (Center for Teaching and Learning) will be happy to advise you.

You can report digital barriers in AULIS by clicking on “Report barrier” in the footer and writing a short note in the email.

Rent an FM system

Starting in the summer semester of 2025, students and employees of HSB will be able to borrow a mobile FM system for their own use or for events. The devices can be borrowed for a single event or for up to three months.

An FM (frequency modulation) system is a wireless transmission system that helps people with hearing aids or cochlear implants to better understand speech in noisy environments or over long distances.

An explanatory video, helpful technical instructions, and information on borrowing can be found on the “FM system” topic page.

Library & Literature

  • Information on the accessibility of the SuUB, Central Library (University of Bremen)

  • SuUB video series in German Sign Language (DGS) (In German)

  • If you require accessible literature due to blindness, visual impairment, or reading disability, you can also contact the authorized agency for accessible literature at the University of Hamburg from Bremen. Unfortunately, there is no conversion service in Bremen.

What is an authorized agency for accessible literature?

Authorized agencies are non-profit institutions that provide educational opportunities or accessible reading and information access for people with visual or reading impairments (Section 45c (3) of the German Copyright Law (UrhG)).

In this sense, they can provide people with blindness, visual impairments, or reading disabilities with literature in accessible, mostly digital formats, store these files, and pass them on to other authorized agencies.

In this sense, they can provide literature in accessible, mostly digital formats to people with blindness, visual or reading impairments, store these files, and pass them on to other authorized bodies. The authorized group of persons includes all persons who, due to a physical, mental, or sensory impairment, even with the use of optical aids, are unable to read spoken works as easily as persons without such impairments (Section 45b (2) UrhG).

    How does it work?

The procedure is described on the information page. The contact email address is: befugte-stelle@uni-hamburg.de

Experience reports

On these websites of the University of Cologne and the project “Barrierefrei Studieren Köln” (Barrier-free Studying Cologne), students and employees with health impairments/disabilities describe their everyday lives, some of them anonymously. They report on the challenges and experiences that shape their everyday study and work lives and describe personal strategies and support options.

Many of these experiences may also apply to your studies at HSB—you are not alone!
