Zur Verbesserung der Ingenieurausbildung im Bereich Raketenantriebe / Raumtransportsysteme wurde 2012, vom BMWi gefördert und durch das DLR Raumfahrtmanagement als Projektträger betreut, das Programm "STERN-Studentische Experimentalraketen" ins Leben gerufen. Das Programm zielt darauf ab, Studierende "hands-on" mit der Entwicklung von Raketenantrieben und Raumtransportsystemen durch die Eigenentwicklung einer Höhenforschungsrakete vertraut zu machen. Das IAT der Hochschule Bremen hat als eine von acht teilnehmenden Hochschulen im Rahmen von STERN 1 die Höhenforschungsrakete AQUASONIC entwickelt, gebaut und im April 2016 erfolgreich gestartet. Im Rahmen von Stern 2 ist nun die Rakete AQUASONIC II in der Entwicklung, die gegenüber der AQUASONIC eine deutlich höhere Flugleistung (Mach 1,4 und 10 km Flughöhe) erreichen soll und dafür im Bereich der Subsysteme Triebwerk, Bergungssystem und Telekommunikationssystem wesentlich verbessert wird. Der Start der AQUASONIC II wurde auf Grund der pandemischen Lage mehrmals verschoben bis letztendlich das STERN 2 Projekt ohne Flug der AQUASONIC II beendet wurde.
