In the exhibition Material / Matter(s)! students of the School of Architecture Bremen of the University of Applied Sciences Bremen and students of Urban Geography of the University of Bremen present their infographics and filmic animations on research around the sustainability of (building) materials. As guests in the project room RE.MATERIAL (former HaBü building / Vor dem Steintor 95-97, 28203 Bremen), the results of the semester projects will be presented on Wednesday, 27.07. from 5 pm. Some selected works will be on display in the project room from 27.07. - 12.08.
We live in the age of the Anthropocene, the geological epoch in which human activities have developed a dimension and force that have significantly altered the Earth's surface and biosphere. We are aware of the consequences of this process and they require a rethinking also in the planning disciplines.
Students of the School of Architecture of the University of Applied Sciences Bremen and students of Urban Geography of the University of Bremen present in the exhibition Material / Matter(s)! infographics and filmic animations on their research around the sustainability of (building) materials.
Construction production - an activity of humans, extracts raw materials from nature in different places or regions, processes them, transports them to their destination and assembles them into buildings there. Put simply, houses, cities and infrastructures are thus natural material accumulated in space.
Students of the School of Architecture at the University of Applied Sciences Bremen and students of urban geography at the University of Bremen have conducted research at various locations in Bremen: Where do the materials in built space come from, what path do they take/took, and in what way do they shape the spaces they pass through? Which actors, norms, rules or technical-craft know-how determine the flow of materials, which contexts does it create or in which processes is it integrated?
A systemic approach analyzes the built environment exemplarily and visualizes the complex interweaving of (building) material with space. Spatial and temporal dimensions are considered across scales, and social relationships, (building) cultural practices, and technical developments interwoven with the material are revealed.
The students' works take an exploratory approach to pressing questions about the sustainability of construction and develop playful, artistic-aesthetic formats of representation and communication for this complex topic. Mappings, infographics and moving images visualize the complex interrelationships and develop narratives of the material.
