CBL week successfully held from 31 March to 4 April 2025: As part of the I-PaCE project, Hochschule Bremen City University of Applied Sciences (HSB), together with its partner university IPB (Bragança/Portugal), implemented an intensive Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) week in the Master's degree programme in Civil Engineering M.Sc. - Sustainable Planning and Building for the first time.
Master's students from Hochschule Bremen City University of Applied Sciences and the partner university IPB (Bragança/Portugal) worked in international teams to develop solution-orientated concepts for current socio-technical challenges in the construction industry - with real practical relevance thanks to the participation of industrial partners GOLDBECK and INROS LACKNER.
Topics & projects of the CBL week:
The students worked on their innovative solutions, developed models, carried out simulations, energy and CO₂ balances in order to create technical solution concepts - accompanied by feedback from the practice partners.
In the initial phase of the CBl, a construction site of the company GOLDBECK in the Tabakquartier was visited and the implementation and problems with lean construction were explained. During a visit to the company INROS LACKNER in the UNI Bremen technology park, the students were introduced to international projects and the challenges they face.
During the workshop week, the students were introduced to the CBL method and familiarised with digital tools for conducting online meetings independently. Interdisciplinary collaboration, dealing with uncertainties and self-directed learning, as well as moving away from predetermined solution structures towards innovative thinking were the core objectives of the CBL mobility week in Bremen - skills that will be indispensable in future engineering careers.
