Initial spark for digitalisation: Detlef Hegemann Foundation donates a total of 240,000 euros for the digitalisation of studies and teaching at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Environment at Bremen University of Applied Sciences
With a donation totalling 240,000 euros until 2024, the Detlef Hegemann Foundation will support the forward-looking, digital equipment of Faculty 2 Architecture, Construction and Environment at Bremen University of Applied Sciences over the next few years. On behalf of the faculty, Dean Prof. Ulrike Mansfeld expressly thanks Dipl.-Kfm. Tim Reiners, Chairman of the Board of Detlef Hegemann AG, Bremen, and Dr. jur. Wolfgang Bayer, Chairman of the Detlef Hegemann Foundation, for the generous and targeted support of the foundation.
The Detlef Hegemann Foundation was established by Detlef Hegemann in 1994 and holds 90 percent of the shares in Detlef Hegemann AG. The Detlef Hegemann Foundation has been supporting the Bremen University of Applied Sciences for many years with study scholarships for naval and civil engineers. The aim of the foundation's commitment is the continuous further development of the digital teaching offers of the Bremen University of Applied Sciences.
With the current donation, the foundation is specifically promoting the digitalisation of studies and teaching at the Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering. With the help of the donations, it was possible to realise the maintenance of teaching through digital teaching formats last year. The digital transformation is changing the planning and construction processes in architecture, civil engineering and environmental technology at a rapid pace. Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) today enable the development of spatial and construction-related specialist data for interdisciplinary planning processes. "For the research-intensive Faculty 2 of Architecture, Building and the Environment, it is a stroke of luck that the Detlef Hegemann Foundation's support has enabled the digital equipment to be brought up to the state of the art with a powerful server. With the new Detlef Hegemann Digital Platform, students, lecturers and staff have access to virtual computers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for seminars, practical exercises and final theses," says Prof. Dr. Thomas Rauscher, Dean of Studies at the Faculty. The virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is also to be used as the digital basis of the future BIM/GIS laboratory of Faculty 2, which is to be expanded into a digital performance centre in Bremen with this funding. Students will be able to relate environmental and energy engineering systems to environmental data, urban planning framework conditions and sociological data in their project-oriented courses of study at the faculty in order to carry out comprehensive and sustainable planning.
Another aspect is the communication of planning processes and the support of participation in Bremen. In addition, the technical and content-related interfaces to Building Information Modelling and 3D building models are integrated into teaching and further developed through research projects in the faculty. With the new professorship "Digital Design and Construction", Prof. Dr. Christopher Robeller will strengthen the spectrum of digital methods for planning and production, with the aim of efficient, sustainable and innovative constructions, in teaching and research in Faculty 2 from 1 May 2021. In cooperation with Prof. Dr. Jürgen Knies from Environmental Engineering, the BIM/GIS laboratory used jointly in teaching and research will be established.
