Department of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering

Peter-Wefing-Prize

The Department of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering at Faculty 2 of Hochschule Bremen City University of Applied Science and the Peter Wefing Foundation award the Peter Wefing Prize to recognise outstanding academic work. In addition, the prize is intended to support students in need and early-career researchers within the department by co-funding their participation in field trips and specialist events, as well as projects aimed at improving their education.

Leading Theme

Sustainable and cost-effective construction, as well as the use of resources in compliance with environmental protection requirements, are among the primary tasks of the future construction industry and environmental protection in our society.
Ecological and economic requirements therefore call for solutions that guarantee long-term sustainability and scope for further development. Ecological and economical construction, as well as environmental protection measures, are based on expert project planning, including, amongst other things, the selection of environmentally friendly materials with minimal primary energy input, whilst ensuring an optimal energy balance resulting from the use of the building and its resources. Functional building design, construction work, as well as the maintenance of building fabric and the careful operation of buildings and facilities should be carried out with the least possible impact on our environment.
In order to adequately meet this requirement, our society needs, on the one hand, political and technical frameworks that make all essential requirements binding. On the other hand, our society is called upon to develop compliance criteria and concrete solutions for environmentally friendly construction, building maintenance and environmental engineering systems in such a way that implementation can take place without major obstacles. Although this process has been underway for years, it will require far greater support in future to ensure tangible success.

Requirements

Bachelor’s and Master’s theses, as well as academic papers, may be submitted provided they deal with topics relating to engineering, civil engineering, transport engineering or environmental engineering. Applicants must be students or early-career researchers in the Department of Civil Engineering and Environment at Bremen University of Applied Sciences.
