Career prospects

The application of computer technology in almost all areas of the economy translates into significantly lower production costs in many areas. This will continue to be an important factor in industry. As a result, graduates in computer engineering enjoy excellent career prospects. Their fields of employment include project planning, sales, service, manufacturing, product development as well as research and development.

Graduates have particularly good prospects in the following fields:

  • Development, conceptual design, programming, installation and maintenance of computer systems and computer networks
  • Development, programming and maintenance of large programme systems using methods of modern software technology
  • Development and programming of microprocessor-based regulation and control systems
  • Sales and service in the field of hard- and software

Programme structure

The seven-semester degree programme in Computer Engineering begins in the first year with the teaching of foundation courses, especially in mathematics, electrical engineering and computer science, as well as technical English. Specialisation begins in the 3rd semester. In the 4th semester the focus shifts to the development of technical competence. The curriculum places roughly equal emphasis on hardware (digital technology, microprocessor technology, computer networks, computer structures) and software (operating systems, software technology, databases).

Scientific and application-oriented aspects are equally represented. In the fifth semester you undertake a work placement, during which you will gain direct experience of the professional activities performed by an engineer. In parallel to the module that accompanies the work placement, business administration is integrated with a focus on corporate organisation, project management and principles of economic processes as well as business administration and management functions. An important component here is an introduction to the topic of occupational safety, as many students complete their work placement in industrial companies close to production. You acquire knowledge about organisational structures and operational processes in the company. Within the context of business games, you contemplate legal, social, cultural, financial and technical aspects of the respective company organisation.
