Application and admission

Further study opportunities

Visiting Student Status

If you are not already enrolled as a student, you can be admitted to individual courses as a visiting student (also known as guest auditor or guest student) in the context of further education programmes or for the duration of a semester. The prerequisite is that this does not interfere with the studies of regular students and exchange students.

As a visiting student, you will receive a certificate of attendance for the course attended, but you are not entitled to take part in examinations.

Application procedure

Apply as a visiting student via our application portal CampInO and select the degree "Visiting Students, Free Mover, Cooperation" there. In the online application, you specify the courses you wish to attend.
Please note: Application is only possible approx. 1 month before the start of the lecture period, as the course programme must first be published.

The decision on your admission as a visiting student is made after consultation with the faculty responsible for the selected course.

Visiting students must pay a fee to attend courses. This is currently 75 euros for one module or up to four semester hours or 150 euros for two modules or up to eight semester hours. The fee increases if the actual costs are not covered, consumables are used or special facilities are used. Please pay the fee after invoicing.

In case of proven social reasons, HSB can reduce the fee or waive the fee altogether upon request. The application for this must be made at the same time as the application for admission as a visiting student.

Free Mover Status

Students from other universities may be admitted to individual courses for the duration of one semester at a time, provided that this does not interfere with the studies of regular students.

To apply as a free mover, please register on CampInO. Select the degree "Visiting Students, Free Mover, Cooperation." In the online application, indicate the courses you wish to take and upload a certificate of enrollment from your current university. The decision on admission as a free mover will be made after consultation with the faculty responsible for the selected course.

As a free mover, you are entitled to take examinations or preliminary examinations in the courses to which you have been admitted.

Preparatory Studies

You have a foreign higher education entrance qualification that entitles you to study at a higher education institution in Germany, but your German language skills are not yet sufficient? Then the preparatory studies programme may be of interest to you!

What are preparatory studies?

While you are preparing for a German language examination at a language school in Bremen, you can be enrolled at the HSB for a maximum of four semesters (two years) as a student in the preparatory studies programme. With the admission letter from HSB, you first apply for a visa at the German Embassy in your home country. After entering Germany, you must then apply for a residence permit and submit it to HSB without delay.

The HSB does not offer its own language courses as part of the preparatory studies. The preparatory study programme is also not part of a subject-related degree programme at the HSB. You can only apply for a degree programme at HSB after you have already passed a German language test (e.g. TestDaF with at least 16 points or Goethe-Zertifikat C1).

Which German courses are recognised in the preparatory study programme?

In order to enrol in the preparatory studies programme, you must take German intensive courses at a language school, which run for at least three months per semester and include 20 hours of instruction per week. Other language courses, especially those with less instruction, cannot be accepted.

The language courses must take place in the semester in which you wish to participate in the preparatory studies:

Winter semester: 1 October – 31 March

Summer semester: 1 April – 30 September

The TestDaF test centres offer intensive preparation courses in addition to the examination.

We recommend that you do not come to us without any previous knowledge of German. It is very difficult to reach the C1 level in German within two years.

How do I apply for the preparatory studies programme?

Because you obtained your higher education entrance qualification outside Germany, you must first apply via uni-assist for pre-assessment documentation (Vorprüfungsdokumentation or VPD) to confirm whether you are entitled to university admission in Germany and how your grade is classified in the German grading system. You have to pay a fee to uni-assist for processing. The application to uni-assist with the necessary copies and the required documents should be submitted as early as possible, as the assessment procedure can take 4-6 weeks.

If the VPD shows that you have a so-called direct university entrance qualification, you can then, and only then, apply for a place at HSB.

Everything you need to know about the VPD procedure can be found on the pages of uni-assist.

After the successful application: Enrolment at the Hochschule Bremen

If your application is complete and all requirements have been met, you will receive your pre-assessment documentation from uni-assist, which you must upload in CampInO, the HSB's application portal.

The following application deadlines apply for the preparatory studies at CampInO:

  • Winter semester: 1 June – 31 August
  • Summer semester: 15 December – 15 March

Once you have been admitted, you will find your admission offer (‘Zulassungsbescheid’) in CampInO as a PDF.

You must formally accept the offer of admission in CampInO within the specified deadlines, otherwise the offer of admission will expire. After accepting the offer of admission, you carry out the online enrolment in CampInO. Afterwards, the "Application for enrolment" is generated, which you must send to the HSB by post together with the documents mentioned therein before the stated deadline.

You must submit the following documents for enrolment:

  • Proof of health insurance
  • Proof of binding enrolment in an intensive German course with 20 lessons per week at a language school in Bremen, lasting three months per semester
  • a copy of your passport
  • a copy of your residence permit. You will receive this from the Migration Office (BSU) after your arrival in Bremen.
  • do not forget to transfer the semester fee (Semesterbeitrag)

Applying for a degree programme at HSB after passing the German language exam

Once you have passed the German language exam (for example, TestDaF with at least 16 points or Goethe-Zertifikat C1), you can then apply for a place on a degree programme at the Hochschule Bremen.

After passing a German language test the preparatory studies programme is over and you can apply for a degree programme at the Hochschule Bremen.

Find out as early as you can about the admission requirements specific to your desired degree programme (e.g. English language skills, prior placements). You can find detailed information on the pages of the respective degree programmes.

You can apply for a place directly via the HSB application portal CampInO. Please enter the grade calculated by uni-assist and the date of your university entrance qualification.
