Das Programm VIBES (Visionary Ingenuity Boosting European Spacecraft) strebt an, den digitalen Satelliten der Zukunft zu bauen. Mit dem Projekt VIBES STM wird ein weiterer Schritt in Richtung dieser ambitionierten Zielsetzung getätigt. VIBES STM baut auf den Ergebnissen des vorangegangenen Vorhabens VIBES MVMS auf, in dessen Rahmen unter anderem ein neuartiges, kosten- und gewichtseffizientes Messsystem für mechanische Störquellen entwickelt und in mehreren Testkampagnen unter Mikrogravitation erfolgreich erprobt wurde. Dieses Messsystem soll nun in den Kleinsatelliten VIBES Pioneer, den ersten studentischen Satelliten Bremens, integriert werden. Damit VIBES Pioneer eine kostenlose Fluggelegenheit ins Weltall wahrnehmen kann, welche die Projektgruppe 2023 über eine Ausschreibung des Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) gewonnen hat, sollen als Teil von VIBES STM entscheidende Komponenten des Satelliten getestet und für den Flug ins All qualifiziert werden. Dafür werden dedizierte Entwicklungsmodelle des Satelliten angefertigt, die sogenannten „Structural Thermal Models“ (STM). Diese erlauben die strukturellen Grenzen des Satelliten zu testen, ohne dass dafür Flughardware riskiert werden muss. Die verschiedenen Testkampagnen werden unter anderem auf Anlagen und mit Unterstützung der Europäischen Raumfahrtagentur (ESA), dem Zentrum für angewandte Raumfahrttechnologie und Mikrogravitation (ZARM) sowie der OHB System AG durchgeführt. Zum Ende des Vorhabens wird mit der Integration des Proto-Flight Models begonnen werden, welches dann von Schottland aus ins Weltall gestartet werden soll.
