DAAD STIBET I Scholarships for International Degree-Seeking Students

Through the STIBET programs, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) uses funds from the Federal Foreign Office (AA) to support international students and doctoral candidates at German universities. A STIBET scholarship is generally not intended for studying abroad or a semester abroad, but rather as financial support for studying in Germany.

STIBET I - Graduation Scholarship

For students in the final phase of their studies who are expected to graduate successfully within one year. 

  • International students with

    • foreign nationality (non-German)
    • a university entrance qualification obtained abroad (not from a school in Germany or a German school abroad)
    • enrollment at HSB with the aim of earning a degree here (degree-seeking students)
    • a valid residence permit for study purposes (§16 AufenthG - Section 16 of the Residence Act)
  • International students, who 

    • (also) hold German citizenship
    • are exchange students and are studying at HSB for only one or two semesters
    • are prospective students (applicants for a spot at HSB) who are not yet enrolled at HSB
    • are students in fee-paying programs at our International Graduate Center

     

    • Good academic performance (minimum GPA of 2.5)In the final phase of your studies
    • In the final phase of your studies with graduation expected within one year - as evidenced by a certificate from the Registrar’s Office (current transcript):
      • your degree program will be completed within the next year, OR
      • you have earned at least 65% of the total credits required for your degree program, OR
      • the thesis has already been registered 
    • No receipt of additional funds from domestic or foreign sources for the same purpose
    • Residence in Germany during the final phase of the degree program/the funding period
    • Financial need (unexpected, through no fault of your own): 
      When assessing financial need, all funds actually available to cover living expenses are taken into account. These include, for example: 
      • Earned income
      • Scholarships
      • Alimony
      • Social benefits
      • Assets
      • other regular income
    • Additional income: If you work while studying, your monthly earnings, including the STIBET scholarship, may not exceed €1,595 per month. 
      Example: €750 graduation scholarship PLUS €845 in additional income.
  • Scholarships of up to 750 euros per month are generally awarded for a maximum of 4 months.
    Duration: September–December 2026 (until the deadline for submitting the thesis at the latest); the funding period cannot be extended.

    The exact amount and duration of the scholarship depend on the funds available at the time. They will be determined by the selection committee and communicated to the scholarship recipients in a timely manner. 

  • June 1 through July 31, 2026

    • Letter of motivation (max. 1 page) explaining the reasons for the financial hardship / the duration of the financial hardship, and details regarding current and previous funding for your studies, as well as 
      • Financial disclosure form
      • Bank statements for all bank accounts covering the last three months
    • Copy of passport
    • Valid residence permit for study purposes or for the purpose of pursuing a doctorate ( §16 AufenthG / §16 of the Residence Act)
    • Current certificate of enrollment
    • Current transcript to assess academic progress and performance (credits and grade point average of courses completed to date)

     

  • Scholarships are awarded based on a ranking determined by the quality of the submitted application materials.

    Scholarship applicants are ranked according to

    • their cumulative GPA,
    • academic progress,
    • and financial need.

    Scholarships are awarded by a selection committee. There is no entitlement to funding. Scholarship recipients will be notified of the selection results via email within four weeks of the application deadline.

STIBET I - Scholarship for the Promotion of Equal Opportunities

For students facing particular challenges in their studies, such as health issues, caregiving responsibilities, or a refugee background.

  • International Students with

    • foreign nationality (non-German)
    • a university entrance qualification obtained abroad (not from a school in Germany or a German school abroad)
    • enrollment at HSB with the aim of earning a degree here (degree-seeking students)
    • a valid residence permit for study purposes (§16 AufenthG / under Section 16 of the Residence Act)
  • International students, who 

    • (also) hold German citizenship
    • are exchange students and are studying at HSB for only one or two semesters
    • prospective students (applicants for a spot at HSB) who are not yet enrolled at HSB
    • students in fee-paying programs at our International Graduate Center

     

    • At least three successfully completed courses at HSB
    • Good academic performance (minimum GPA of 2.5)
    • Special challenges and personal circumstances
    • No receipt of additional funds from domestic or foreign sources for the same purpose
    • Residence in Germany during the final phase/funding period
    • Financial need (unexpected, through no fault of your own): 
      When assessing financial need, all funds actually available to cover living expenses are taken into account. These include, for example: 
      • Earned income
      • Scholarships
      • Alimony
      • Social benefits
      • Assets
      • other regular income
    • Additional income: If you work while studying, your monthly earnings, including the STIBET scholarship, may not exceed €1,595 per month.

      • Financial disclosure form
      • Bank statements for all bank accounts covering the last three months
    • Documentation of your specific challenges, e.g.:
      • Disability: Proof of a disability rating (GdB) of at least 50% – Disability ID card
      • Chronic illness: Medical certificate
      • Refugee status: Proof of asylum application or other appropriate documentation,
      • Caring for children under 12 in your own household (especially single parents): Birth certificate(s) of the children and, for single parents, a copy of the lease agreement
      • Care of relatives: Certificate of residence showing the address of the person requiring care, birth certificate(s) showing the family relationship
    • Copy of passport
    • Valid residence permit for study purposes or for the purpose of pursuing a doctorate (§16 AufenthG / §16 of the Residence Act)
    • Current certificate of enrollment
    • Current transcript to assess academic progress and performance (credits and grade point average of courses completed to date)

STIBET I - Scholarship for Special Commitment

For students who have distinguished themselves through outstanding commitment in an international context at HSB.

We award DAAD scholarships to international students for their outstanding voluntary engagement. Please note that your commitment must have an international focus at the university level.

  • International Students mit

    • Foreign nationality (non-German)
    • a university entrance qualification obtained abroad (not from a school in Germany or a German school abroad)
    • Enrollment at HSB with the aim of earning a degree here (degree-seeking students)
    • Valid residence permit for study purposes (§16 AufenthG /Section 16 of the Residence Act)
  • International Students, who 

    • (also) hold German citizenship
    • are exchange students and are studying at HSB for only one or two semesters
    • prospective students (applicants for a spot at HSB) who are not yet enrolled at HSB
    • At least three successfully completed courses at HSB
    • Good academic performance (minimum GPA of 2.5)
    • Proof of existing, regular involvement in an international context at HSB (part-time or volunteer), e.g., mentoring international students as a buddy, in student organizations, the student council, the AStA, at cultural events, or in tandem and mentoring programs.
    • Additional income: If you work while studying, your monthly earnings, including the STIBET scholarship, may not exceed €1,595 per month. 
      Example: €750 graduation scholarship PLUS €845 in additional income.
    • No receipt of additional funds from domestic or foreign sources for the same purpose
    • Residence in Germany during the final phase of your studies/the funding period
  • Active involvement in an international context at HSB is the basis for applying for this scholarship. Such involvement is often referred to as volunteer work.

    The involvement must meet the following criteria:

    • It must have taken place at least during the semester prior to the start of funding (future involvement cannot be counted).
    • It must officially qualify as volunteer work (i.e., activities carried out independently and without profit motive for the benefit of others, oriented toward the common good) and be only minimally compensated.
    • It should have a minimum duration of 6 months. In the case of a shorter commitment, a significant impact must be demonstrated (e.g., a large-scale fundraising campaign).
    • Written proof from an HSB-affiliated institution or association regarding the duration, scope, and nature of the social or intercultural commitment must be submitted (with the institution’s official letterhead and the contact information of the person issuing the document).
  • Scholarships of up to 750 euros per month are generally awarded for a maximum of 4 months.
    Duration: September – December 2026 (until the deadline for submitting the thesis at the latest); an extension of the funding period is not possible.

    The exact amount and duration of the scholarship depend on the funds available at the time. They will be determined by the selection committee and communicated to the scholarship recipients in a timely manner. 

  • June 1 through July 31, 2026

    • Letter of motivation (max. 1 page) describing your involvement in international activities at HSB
    • Certificate detailing the nature, scope, and duration of your involvement (on official letterhead and including the contact information of a representative from HSB’s internal organization)
    • Copy of passport
    • Valid residence permit for study purposes or for the purpose of pursuing a doctorate (§16 AufenthG / §16 of the Residence Act)
    • Current certificate of enrollment
    • Current transcript for the assessment of academic progress and performance (credits and grade point average of courses completed to date)

Incomplete applications or those submitted after the deadline cannot be considered. All application materials must be uploaded online. Materials submitted in paper form or via email cannot be processed.
