Under the title “Women in Science”, nine female scientists from the nine STARS EU partner universities talk in interviews about their motivations, achievements and challenges.
Episode 6 is about HSB professor Dr Ilknur Colmorn. She is a professor of maritime navigation and digitalisation and head of the Ship Management – Nautical Sciences Degree Programme. After completing her studies, she went to sea as a first officer. For her, the decision to pursue a career in nautical science was the best decision of her life. Despite the male-dominated field, Colmorn has managed to make a name for herself as a great teacher and programme director thanks to her considerable skills, determination and professionalism.
In 2022, the professor was honoured for ‘Outstanding Academic Maritime Teaching’ by the German Maritime Centre (DMZ). In the course of this award, one student emphasised: ‘As a student and future officer, I see her as a great example of commitment and professionalism in this challenging career. She has become a great motivation for me on my path.’
Until 8 March, International Women's Day, the university alliance will publish nine individual video portraits, each dedicated to a STARS EU researcher. The films show their professional careers: what motivated them to become researchers and what excites them about their field of research, but also what challenges they have overcome. The researchers interviewed offer advice to young people considering a career in science. They address young women and all scientists: to create a collegial and inclusive scientific community. From the University of Bremen (HSB), Captain and scientist Professor Dr Ilknur Colmorn will be featured.
The films celebrate female researchers from STARS EU partner universities and provide exciting insights into their work. The stories also offer an opportunity to exchange ideas about the achievements and future tasks of gender equality work.
