Traditional ship is looking for a dedicated crew – join in, sail and assist with repairs

The sailing ship Franzius is set to set sail again – students can help and be part of it! Whether it's refitting, concept development or later sailing: get involved in a unique environmental and educational project with wind, water and team spirit. Join now and become part of the Franzius crew!

A traditional ship, a sustainable project and plenty of team spirit – that's the Franzius. Until 2019, the flat-bottomed sailing ship was an integral part of excursions in the Blue Sciences study programme at Hochschule Bremen HSB. Whether in the Wadden Sea or visiting the Jade-Weser Port, the Franzius offered students a unique place to learn on the water. However, the ship is currently not seaworthy – extensive repairs are pending.

Now, the former research vessel is being transformed into a joint project for students, university staff and all sailing enthusiasts: the association ‘Bremer Weserkahn Franzius e.V.’ is working with HSB on a new concept for its preservation and future use. Workshops, seminars and practical projects are planned – from coastal protection to environmental education. Sailing operations are scheduled to resume in 2027. Anyone who would like to get involved can play an active role in any area: organisation, social media, fundraising or directly on board.

Sail training: cultural heritage with wind in its sails

The Franzius is part of the Sail Training Association Germany (S.T.A.G.) fleet – a network of traditional sailing ships that inspires people of all ages to take up seafaring. Sail training means sailing together, taking responsibility and having fun – no previous experience necessary. Since 2023, it has been officially recognised as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage in Germany.

Young people up to the age of 26 can take part in sailing trips through S.T.A.G. at a reduced price or even free of charge, as in the international youth regattas of the Tall Ships Races. Those over 26 can participate at the regular price. Those who want to delve deeper into the matter can receive support in training for ship handling, safety or medical care on board. The ‘Franzius’ thus offers not only adventure, but also real prospects – with added value!

Interested? Then come aboard!

The basic principles on board are solidarity, community spirit and enjoyment of seafaring. Join the Franzius project as part of an active community of sea enthusiasts. Together, we are shaping a ship with tradition for the future.
