Erasmus+ for students

Erasmus+ for short-term mobilities

A study period abroad usually goes over a longer period of time: a semester or year abroad at a partner university or as a free mover, an traineeship abroad lasting several months, a thesis abroad. With the start of the 2021 - 2027 programme generation of the Erasmus+ programme, the possibilities for funded stays abroad have been greatly expanded once again.

Students who, for various reasons, cannot complete a regular Erasmus+ study or traineeship stay have the option of short-term mobility, which is compulsorily supplemented by a virtual component.

Different possibilities for short-term mobility

  • A new type of stay, the so-called Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), enables funding of short-term mobility in a hybrid format, i.e. the combination of a short physical stay and a compulsory digital learning component that takes place before, after or during the physical stay. At least 3 ECTS points are awarded for the entire stay (physical and digital). For more information on the Blended Intensive Programmes, please visit our website.

  • Short-term programmes are one to four-week courses offered by a higher education institution, usually during the lecture-free period in summer. Hence the term summer school. However, there are also programmes that take place in winter or spring (Winter or Spring School). These programmes can be organised by higher education institutions and offer students the opportunity to study a specific topic, learn a new language or acquire new skills. Summer schools and short-term programmes can be a good way to gain international experience and meet students from other countries. Participation in a Summer School can be supported by an Erasmus+ grant if it includes a compulsory virtual part. Erasmus funding will only support the period abroad.

More information on short-term mobility and the range of summer schools in 33 European countries can be found on the European Commission's „European Area of Education“ website.

Good to know

    • Erasmus+ supports travel and subsistence costs for short-term mobilities lasting between a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 30 consecutive days for students in Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD programs.
    • Mobility at a host institution.
    • A virtual component is mandatory for students in Bachelor's and Master's programs (e.g., online learning as part of a course).
    • For PhD students, the virtual component is optional.
    • All mobilities funded by Erasmus+ are counted towards a maximum duration of 12 months per study cycle.
    • Stays in Germany, the home country, or the country of residence during studies cannot be funded.
    • You can apply at any time, but you must apply at least 3 months before your stay.
    • All degree seeking HSB students in the Bachelor-, Master- und PhD-programmes
    • In institutions (e.g. companies, organisations, research institutions) or at a higher education institution in countries participating in Erasmus+.
    • In universities that have obtained the Erasmus+ Charter and have concluded an Erasmus cooperation agreement with HSB (basic requirement for mobility).
  • For mobilities funded by the Erasmus projects 2021/22 and 2022/23, the funding is 70 euros per day for the first 14 days of stay and 50 euros per day for the remaining days of stay (up to a maximum of 30 days). For mobilities funded from the 2023/24 project, these are 79 euros and 56 euros respectively. Students with fewer opportunities will receive additional funding.

A one-off grant is provided for the use of environmentally friendly means of transport. Students who study abroad through Erasmus+ do not pay tuition fees at their host university.

For more information on the amount of funding, see our BIP-website.
