Finances

Money plays a major role, especially for students with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. In addition to the financing requirements, which vary depending on the degree programme, the additional financial costs for living expenses, health care and assistance for participation in studies must also be taken into account.

If you inform yourself well and put together a good financing strategy, you can put your studies on a solid financial footing.

  • Severely disabled persons (with a degree of disability of 50% or more) who are entitled to transport under the Severely Disabled Persons Act (Schwerbehindertengesetz) and can prove that they are in possession of the supplementary certificate with the corresponding token, or who are unable to use public means of transport due to their disability, or who are able to use them free of charge (registration mark aG), can be exempted from the semester ticket.

For this you need the following proof:

    • a copy of your severely disabled person's card
    • a copy of the token
    • your original semester ticket
    • your bank details
    • the application form

  • During a leave of absence, you can be exempted from paying the student union fee (Studierendenwerksbeitrag). Possible reasons include:

Study-related stay abroad or placement abroad

    serious, long-term illness

BAföG and Social Counselling of the AStA (only available in German)

Disability or chronic illness and BAföG

For students with disabilities or chronic illnesses, studying involves more time – and often greater financial difficulties. This special study situation is taken into account when financing studies with BAföG (special regulation).

The Studierendenwerk is responsible for student financing, also taking into account the special situation of students with disabilities. The prerequisite for recognition is proof of the disability by means of a medical certificate.

Important: This information on BAföG does not claim to be complete and is provided without guarantee! An early consultation with the Studierendenwerk is therefore essential.
