Hochschule Bremen (HSB) thrives on the people who study, work and enrich the university as visitors. In our ‘Three questions for…’ series, we introduce some of them. Here: Nurdane Irmak. The 19-year-old has been studying the dual degree programme in Business and Administrative Informatics at the HSB since October 2024. Since February, the tech-savvy young woman has been completing her practical placement in the D1 – Human Resources Department. Nurdane Irmak supports the D1 team in driving forward digitalisation in administration.
Ms Irmak, you applied directly to the Training and Further Education Centre (AFZ) in Bremen to undertake your dual degree programme in the public sector. You are completing your first practical placement at the HSB in the Human Resources department. Some of your fellow students are in the private sector. Why did you make this decision?
Digitalisation is evident in many areas of our lives – and it has a great many advantages. I therefore believe it is important that public administration is also digitalised more extensively. Digitalisation can make processes faster, more efficient, more targeted and more environmentally friendly. Here, I can still make a real difference and shape things in the public sector. That interests me and I enjoy it. I also value the long-term prospects and the security that the public sector can offer. The opportunity not just to work, but also to make a real contribution and support society, motivates me greatly.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on a project aimed at making Hochschule Bremen an even more attractive employer than before. Part of this project focuses on how we can integrate the WhatsApp messaging service into the application process for the public sector. The aim is to simplify communication with applicants whilst making use of modern, digital tools that streamline day-to-day work. In this context, I am also looking into the legal aspects that need to be taken into account when using such tools. It is exciting to work in an innovative team that is driving forward such forward-looking changes. Furthermore, I find it particularly valuable to apply theory directly in practice.
What are your career plans after graduation? Will you be staying in Bremen?
After I finish my degree, I definitely want to stay in the public sector because I see it as an opportunity to play an active role in digitalisation and modernisation. I could imagine continuing to work in Bremen to make the public sector even more efficient and citizen-friendly. I find the challenge of optimising public services so that they are easily accessible to all citizens – regardless of prior technical knowledge or resources – particularly fascinating. I look forward to implementing specific projects after my studies and bringing about real change. For me, this is not just a professional goal, but also a personal passion.
I could also well imagine staying in Bremen to continue doing something for the city. I was born and raised here and completed my schooling here. Bremen is my home. I feel connected to this city, and it would be lovely to contribute to Bremen’s further development.
