Language Skills

Numerous degree programmes are taught in German or English language. For this reason, a certificate giving evidence of your English and/or German language skills should accompany your application in the shape of an acknowledged English/German language proficiency test. The relevant certificates must be submitted at the time of your application. Please seek information about the requirements applying to the study course you plan to take on the programmes' websites.
Language certificates

To provide evidence of good German skills you need to submit one of the following certificates:

  • a passed TestDaF-exam (Test of German as a Second Language) with the result 16 points or more
  • a passed DSH-exam (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber = German Language Examination for the Entrance of Applicants from Abroad to German Universities) - level DSH-2 or DSH-3 (Please note that this exam is not offered in Bremen!)

The following are recognized as equivalent:

Applicants with a university degree in German (language/literature) under certain circumstances may apply for an exemption of the language test.

Applicants, having passed the exam from the preparatory course (Feststellungsprüfung FSP) of a German preparatory college (Studienkolleg) as well as applicants with a university degree in German (language/literature) are not required to take any further language tests.
