Practical orientation
Apart from the studies abroad, the integrated phase combining practical placement with theory is a further component of the profile of the International Degree Course for Nursing and Health Care Management.During this phase the students extend their knowledge and abilities acquired through their previous studies - by applying them to complex problems in practice. The transfer of theories within the framework of organizational structures is thus tried out; at the same time the ability to act on a management level, the ability to act within a team and the ability to communicate are being promoted.
On the following pages you will find information on the sequence of the integrated practical placement phase, our co-operation partners and a list of some of project examples which have been carried out by our students over the past few years.
Sequence of the practical placement combined with theory
(Neuer Unterpunkt) The practical placement phase begins after the preparatory study semester (5th semester) and takes place in the 6th and 7th semester (combination of theory and practice).
The main objective of the practical placement phase is to combine the positive aspects of a full-time course with the experiences and training possibilities which guarantee a practice-oriented development of competence as well as a preparation for the future field of activity. Therefore, the students do a practical placement as well as a project - supervised by the Hochschule - within a public health institution of their choice during this phase.
This two-semester phase is accompanied by practice-oriented theoretical lectures at the Hochschule Bremen. It is thus ensured that the introduction into practice as well as the project phase can be continually supervised in a subject-related way.
The lectures usually start with a theoretical phase of 4 weeks and end with a 2-week evaluation phase. This entire study phase contains 2 five-day comprehensive lectures. During the times when no theoretical lectures are offered, the share of practical work amounts to 20 weeks (full-time work).
Altogether about 50% of term-time should be spent within the practical field and 50% at the Hochschule. A total of 8 modules of 3 hrs/wk are offered simultaneously with the practical placement phase.
The practical training phase is completed with a written practical and project report. A final public presentation of all project work has now become an integral part of the practical training phase. Co-operations
(Neuer Unterpunkt) The students usually propose institutions with which they would like to cooperate during the practical training phase. However, some permanent partnerships within the Bremen region have been established in all fields of activity of nursing, e.g. with
hospitals
out-patient nursing institutions
in-patient nursing institutions for the elderly
rehabilitative institutions
the medical service of health insurance schemes
organisational advisory services of the region
consultancies Project examples
(Neuer Unterpunkt)
The students undertake to work on a project or a specific task independently - in coordination with the Hochschule. The project should be geared to prepare students for leadership functions in nursing.
