With regards to the increasing globalisation of business, classical study courses such as Business Administration are no longer sufficient to prepare graduates for future global occupations. As a city experienced in foreign trade, Bremen therefore introduced the international study course ‘Angewandte Wirtschaftssprachen (AWS)’ (Applied Business Languages) on 14 th March 1988, for which it received its current title ‘Angewandte Wirtschaftssprachen und Internationale Unternehmensführung (AWS)’ (Applied Business Languages and International Business Management) in February 1997.
This study course combines business and national economic subjects with an outer-European language (Arabic, Japanese or Chinese) and a European business language (English or French). It is based on a solid foundation of essential skills in business and social structures of the relevant language regions, which is reinforced by a one-year practical study period within the country of the chosen language .
The AWS study course was adapted to a Bachelor’s degree in 2004. The new modular structure forms transparency within European and international contexts. Besides the increased mobility of students, the world-renowned Bachelor’s Degree ( Bachelor of Arts in Business Arabic/Japanese/Sinology ) raises the occupational chances of graduates both on a national and international scale. Further education is equally possible in numerous Master’s Degree courses within Germany and around the world.
The first two years of study in Bremen provide basic and advanced skills
- in the first foreign languages Arabic, Chinese or Japanese,
- in business and the society of the target region including history, philosophy, culture and politics,
- in business English or business French,
- in economics as well as BWL (BUSINESS ADMINISTRATIION), VWL (ECONOMICS), economic law and business information technology.
The acquired skills are reinforced in the third year through two practical study semesters in the country of the chosen language. By rule of thumb, the year abroad can be divided into a reinforcing language study programme at one of the partner colleges of Bremen University of Applied Sciences as well as a final internship at one of the businesses or institutes on location. The internship semester in the target region is completed in German, international and local companies, authorities, international organisations and associations etc.
Numerous agreements with colleges in the Arab Emirates, Republic of China, Taiwan , Hong Kong and Japan support co-operation with students in their education as well as the exchange of scientists. Bremen University of Applied Sciences provides assistance with the acquisition and organisation of the period of practical training abroad. With the interim and end-of-year report, the year abroad counts towards an integral part of the study programme. The fourth year of study deepens international management skills, those of a selected BWL (BUSINESS ADMINISTRATIION) topic such as controlling, human recourses, marketing, the first foreign language and the economy and society of the target region and as such critically reflects the practical skills obtained in the third year. One module of the final semester is reserved for the writing of a bachelor thesis.
