1 to 1 ½ Years Before Commencing Course of Study

You should take address the following 1 to 1 ½ years before you wish to begin your course of study (spring/summer of the year before).

Language Skills
In order to pursue full-time studies at the University, you must provide evidence of good German skills.
You need to submit one of the following certificates:

• a passed TestDaF-exam (Test of German as a Second Language) with the result 16 points or more

• a passed DSH-exam (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber = German Language Examination for the Entrance of Applicants from Abroad to German Universities) - level DSH-2 or DSH-3
Please note that this exam is not offered in Bremen!

The following are recognized as equivalent:

• Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz – Stufe II (DSD II)
• Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or C2

Please hand in an officially certified copy of your documents.

Applicants with a university degree in German (language/literature) under certain circumstances may apply for an exemption of the language test.

Applicants, having passed the exam from the preparatory course (Feststellungsprüfung FSP) of a German preparatory college (Studienkolleg) as well as applicants with a university degree in German (language/literature) are not required to take any further language tests.

There are several ways to improve your German skills:

  • You can participate in a four-week vacation course offered by the University with the programme of the Summer School.

  • Investigate the possibility of taking language courses in your native country. The Goethe-Institut has offices in 76 countries.

  • Those already in Germany or who wish to participate in an intensive language course immediately before courses begin can attend one of the many private language schools in Bremen.
