The learning and working processes of students are subject to constant changes. New challenges in examinations, job insecurities, strains in the social or familial field, societal transformations, digitalization and other factors can cause stress.
Mindfulness can be a valuable help and support. First studies on the MBST® curriculum show a highly significant optimization of physiological stress regulation. Linked to this is an improvement of overall well-being and of motivation, concentration and emotion regulation in (but not limited to) daily student life. Additionally, a different attitude towards perfectionism, procrastination, a sense of connectedness to peers, self-efficacy and an improvement of the compulsory and health compromising use of the internet was reported.
Mindfulness-Based Student Training MBST® combines individual and social with systemic and ecological mindfulness exercises. The secular mindfulness concepts of Jon Kabat-Zinn (University of Massachusetts Medical School), Tania Singer (Max Planck Society), Claus Otto Scharmer (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Arawana Hayashi (Presencing Institute) play a major role.
Students are invited to share their experiences of the course material and mindfulness techniques with other members of the group. Personal exchange takes place both in the course and in the weekly dialogue meditation (dyad) with a personal “buddy” from the group. The process is further supported by the students keeping a mindfulness journal.
The course addresses primarily international students from all faculties (Bachelor and Master), but other students are welcome.
The course curriculum focuses on simple exercises that have a direct impact on students’ well-being and mental health. The two main goals of the course are to teach the basic ABC of individual and social, systemic and ecological mindfulness practices and to help students integrate 15-20 minutes of mindfulness practice into their daily routines.
sitting, walking and dialogue meditations, breathing and physical exercises, mindful writing, body scans, exchange of experiences and reflection
Digital Detox Retreat: five hours in silence without Social Media practicing a selection of guided mindfulness practices
Examination: reflective report (in order to get 3 credits for the course): otherwise certificate of attendance
Mindfulness unfolds its scientifically well-studied effects primarily through regularity of application. Therefore, the backbone of the course is the daily practice of mindfulness at home (roughly 15 minutes per day). Audio files will be provided for this purpose. Active participation in the weekly sessions as well as the Digital Detox Retreat are compulsory.
