Course Content

The degree programme International Studies of Shipping and Chartering at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen has been conceived as a full-time study programme. The programme's range of courses is subdivided into various learning areas from the fields of maritime economics, nautical science and technology, maritime management as well as "soft skills". The learning contents are taught partly in parallel and partly based on each other, whereby a clear demarcation between basic studies and in-depth coursework has intentionally been avoided in order to due justice to the wide spectrum of course offerings. Nonetheless in the first two semesters a greater weighting of the basic subjects can be noted, while as of the third semester a greater disposition of majors and major subjects occurs.

The fifth semester involves a practical semester abroad, which includes one part for preperation and another part concerning the evaluation of the practical part. During the practical training, ISSC students complete a mandatory internship (practical placement period) in a maritime business or transport company which lasts at least 18 weeks. The seventh and final semester consists of three compulsory elective modules each consisting of three prescribed elective fields and two modules for the Bachelor's thesis.

In the Bremen model the course of study extends over 20 semester periods per week with a time of attendance of 45 minutes each (300 contact hours) and 40 semester periods per week with 45 minutes (600 hours) of self-study per semester.
The self-study also includes the work content for the module-related exercise as instructed self-study, which comprises one semester period per week per module.

The essential elements of this International programme are a curriculum oriented towards international developments and global business, foreign language instruction and a compulsory semester abroad.
