Hochschule Bremen - University of Applied Sciences

Relevance to Practice

The great strength of a university of applied sciences is that of drawing from practical experience. The course is fully directed towards the later occupational practice of its graduates.

  • At the time of admission, about 85% of our students hold a completed qualification in a commercial occupation (a traineeship as industry assistants, banking, removals, shipping or tax workers etc.).
  • According to the legislation governing higher education, a person can only be appointed professor at a university of applied sciences if they have at least five years’ relevant practical experience.
  • A large number of highly qualified part-time lecturers from the world of business teach in our department.
  • The course incorporates a longer period of intensive practical work in addition to the regular practical phases. It can be undertaken in Germany or abroad, with the agreement of the partner company concerned.
  • The intensive phase of practical training provides ideas for the choice of specialisation in the last two semesters.
  • Many students write their final thesis in close co-operation with a company.
  • Practical experience should be drawn from each phase of the course. As later professional experience varies considerably, requirements differ greatly and practice furthermore develops so rapidly, our graduates are of course not immediately fully qualified for the workplace. Learning-on-the-job will therefore also be a necessity in most cases.

All lose strings are tied together in our "Centre for International Relations and Business Contacts": the organisation of internships, advice and welfare of students, advice for companies in search of trainees or practice-oriented final dissertations.
