Allocation of Places

Selection/Allocation Procedure

Considering the soaring number of applications, the number of vacant places in basic study courses will be limited. Available places will be allocated by applying a selection procedure.

Of the overall number of possible admissions to a study course– as may prove necessary– the following special contingents must be held in reserve:

  • 8% for foreign nationals (with university entry qualification)
  • 5% for hardship cases
  • 2% for professionally qualifying applicants.

The places of a study course, which are not reserved to those who are preferentially admitted or to special contingents, will be allocated by 80% according to the allocation procedure and by 20% after the waiting period.

A succession procedure and lottery will ensue in the event that the admitted applicants do not accept their place within a certain period defined by Bremen University of Applied Sciences or fail to register. The selection of applicants proceeds depending on the choice of the respective study course either according to
  • the average grade of the university entry level certificate (Abitur) or technical college maturity certificate (Fachabitur)

  • or according to the result a selection procedure specified in more detail by applying the selection instruments below:
  1. Assessment of statements made in a letter of application to be submitted with the application for admission, or

  2. test results, or

  3. Assessment of certified professional qualifications or practical employments, or

  4. Assessment of selection interviews, or

  5. A combination of two or more instruments according to nos. 1 to 4.

Waiting period is the time which has elapsed since the acquisition of one's university entry qualification and during which no studies have been taken up (previous study periods reduce the waiting period). A maximum of 8 waiting half-years will be considered.

Applicants who

  • are engaged in military or civilian service pursuant to Article 12a Paragraph 1 or 2 of German Basic Constitutional Law or render such service on a time basis for a minimum duration of three years,

  • completed or were engaged in at least two years of work as a development aid worker in the sense of the Development Aid Workers Act from 18. July 18, 1969,

  • completed a voluntary year of social or environmental work, have taken on the obligations to engage in such activity, or have been active in the scope of a model project funded by the German Federal Government,

  • reared a child under 18 years of age, or for a minimum period of three years provided nursing care to a relative in need of care,

will be preferentially selected, if admission to a study course of their choice has been received immediately prior to the onset or in the course of service or an equivalent activity, or if no admission contingents have been determined for this study course at the onset of service or while service has been in progress.

The applicant must apply for admission at the latest prior to the second allocation procedure, which is carried out after his/her service or equivalent duty.

In the event that the service or the equivalent duty has not yet been completed, the applicant shall give credible proof that his/her service will be terminated prior to the first day of classes. If a ranking order must be determined among the preferentially selected applicants, admissions will be decided upon by lottery.

Lottery

Bremen University of Applied Sciences is privileged to terminate the allocation procedure by declaration. Places still available may then be allocated by a lottery.

If an application for admission for the selection procedure already exists, the applicant shall only have to submit an application in writing within a time period to be defined by Bremen University of Applied Sciences in order to participate in the lottery procedure.

Bremen University of Applied Sciences is privileged to terminate the lottery allocation process by declaration, if additional admissions no longer appear to make sense once the university is too long in session.
