Relevance to Practice

Information on the practical semester
Principles and objectives
The course leading to the qualification and the licence contains six theory-based and two practical semesters. The practical semesters serve to imbue the student with the capabilities and aptitudes necessary for the later duties performed in the career of a nautical ship officer. Students will learn both nationally and internationally proscribed, practical course content, which is essential for the awarding of the licence.

The aim of the first practical semester is to learn all the professions involved on a ship. During this time as many practical experiences in these occupations, and their relevant skills, should be picked up by the student as possible; these, of course, will be built upon during the theory-based study which follows.

The aim of the second practical semester is to apply the theoretical knowledge the students learn into practical situations. In particular, students should become familiar with the tasks and duties of a nautical watch officer. The second practical semester is, usually, performed in the sixth semester. The content of the course fulfils the guidelines mentioned above. The contents are documented in the Training – Record – Book, as is required by the StAK (Ständige Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Küstenländer für das Seefahrtbildungswesen or the German Sea State Association for maritime education and training) and the BMVBW (Bundesminister für Verkehr, Bau- und Wohnungswesen or the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Housing).

The completion of the practical element of the course is obligatory to proceed.
