Abstract:

At the Hochschule Bremen (City University of Applied Sciences Bremen) there is a long tradition with the development and test from safety related equipment for ships. Since 50 years we work together with international certification agencies like DNV GL, Lloyd´s Register, IACS, Bureau Veritas. For example we developed together the first guidelines for Air pipe closing devices, which were resumed later worldwide. It contains the first tightness and flow characteristics tests. A distinction is made between weathertight and watertight. Weather tightness is important for the normal operation of the ship. All equipment should seal against rain and waves. Water tightness of the equipment is of interest when the ship is capsized.
The Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment reformed the test conditions in the “Guidelines for testing and application of automatic closing devices preventing progressive flooding in probabilistic damage stability calculations”
