Abstract
A special concept for optimizing CHP-units with combustion engines was developed and investigated theoretically within former research work. This concept converts the waste heat into electricity with an Organic-Rankine-Cycle (ORC) process at medium or low temperature level and was elaborated originally as a possible measure for waste heat utilization from biogas plants.
The special features are two expansion stages corresponding to the temperature levels of exhaust gas and engine cooling water. One of the original novel solutions related to the practical realization of the concept is a screw engine as
expansion device, in order to use its advantages as the second expansion stage (engine cooling water system as heat source). The appropriate one stage test installation has been developed and designed in the Laboratory for Energy
Engineering in the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen. A Variscrew VMY 046 refrigerant screw compressor has been used in the test plant installation, chosen from the product range of “Aerzen”.
The general components of the test bench are shown in Fig. 1. Additionally an exemplary display screen of the measurement program LabVIEW is presented to illustrate the circuit diagram of the installation and thermal parameters of the cycle as a practical operation example.
The test plant was put into operation 2014 and the first practical experiences and data have been collected. They can be evaluated from different point of views: thermodynamic cycle evaluation, operational experiences and characteristics of screw expander and lubrication-installation as an integral part of the expander, analysis of energy losses, and others. In the future, investigations of different working fluids and diverse system modifications are possible. The existing test bench can also be used as demonstration plant for didactics and potential commercial applications.
